School is out for the summer and there are moments I long for my kids to channel their inner Olivia and entertain themselves! And then more often than not, I regret those moments because the self entertainment destroys the house… primarily my kitchen (“Mom! We made you a tasty smoothie!”…cornstarch, an apple, pancake syrup, and water does not make a tasty smoothie). Anyways, Olivia the pig is great and this week I’m going to share some simple Olivia inspired activities to help you to both connect with your child and allow you and your child some alone time!
First things first. Who is Olivia? To Ian Falconer, the author and illustrator for the Olivia books, she was inspired by his niece. To me, Olivia is very much like what I want my children to be. Curious, determined, fun-loving, a strong sense of self, unwavering, inventive, and cultured are just a few words to describe her! As Olivia marches to her own beat, life just seems to be a never ending adventure… even when she is just entertaining herself!
Today let’s get acquainted with the host of Olivia books!
Olivia saves the circus, forms a band, counts, learns her A,B,C’s, and the list goes on. You can find all of these books from the publisher, Amazon.com, and from your local bookstore (this is not an exhaustive list, obviously – I only listed 3 places, but you can find these books almost everywhere!).
But what if, like me, you have kids who can’t read yet? Have no fear! You can listen to the original Olivia book here (just go to the second page and select the Olivia book)!
